Consultant-led care

In some cases, women and birthing people may have more intractable HG, or additional complexities, best cared for by consultants — Obstetric Physicians, Maternal Medicine doctors, or Obstetricians. Check your local services to find out which consultants support HG sufferers in your area.

Perinatal Mental Health Services

Accessible throughout the perinatal period. In some areas, Perinatal Trauma & Loss Teams can support women and birthing people with HG. Referral routes vary — please find out what services are available in your area and how to refer.

Discharge Planning

Many HG sufferers will need ongoing support throughout the first and second trimester, with a significant number experiencing symptoms of HG for the duration of their pregnancy. It is important to manage expectations when treating women and birthing people with HG, without providing false hope that symptoms will ease at a specific time.

On discharge from either inpatient or ambulatory care, consider the following:

  • Repeat prescriptions for anti-emetics.
  • Information about how to get different anti-emetics if needed.
  • Who will be responsible for ongoing care?
  • Instructions for returning if symptoms increase.
  • Any further referrals that might be necessary.
